UP Outdoors

Plan your trip

Bugs

Black flies peak in late spring and mosquitoes in June and July. Bring repellent and a head net for forested or swampy hikes.

Weather

Lake Superior makes its own weather. Expect cool, windy shoreline even on warm days, and carry a rain layer.

Cell service

Coverage is patchy or absent in much of the UP. Download maps before you leave.

Lake safety

Superior water stays cold all summer and rip currents occur. Stay off wet rocks and cliff edges.

Wildlife

Black bears live across the UP. Store food properly and keep dogs leashed.

Leave no trace

Pack out what you pack in and stay on marked trails.

Winter

Roads and some trails close. Many parks stay open for snowshoeing and skiing; check the managing agency for conditions.
